Our educational institutions today are cursed by at least four fatal legacies of the Industrial Revolution—ideas that may have been helpful a century ago but have no place in today’s world. In today’s fast-paced world, education needs to be spread out over a lifetime…

First, although cars can be assembled on demand, it’s absurd to teach people when they’re not ready to learn. As the brilliant German educator Kurt Hahn (the founder of Outward Bound) said, teaching people who are aren’t ready is like “pouring and pouring into a jug and never looking to see whether the lid is off.”

Second, although mass education was exciting in the era that invented mass production, it does a great disservice to the vast majority of students. People have radically different learning styles and abilities, and effective learning—learning that benefits all students—is necessarily individualized and self-paced. This is the elephant in the classroom from which no teacher can hide.

Third, although it’s efficient to cram all apparently essential knowledge into the first two decades of life, the main thing we teach most students with this approach is to hate school. In today’s fast-paced world, education needs to be spread out over a lifetime, and the main thing we need to teach our young people is to love the process of learning.

Finally, whereas [the] first compulsory-education law in Massachusetts was competency-based, the system that grew in its wake requires all young people to attend school, no matter what they know. TED Talks – TED (Technology Entertainment Design) is an annual conference with the mission of discussing “ideas worth spreading.” These talks are some of the most informative, concise expressions of thinking anywhere on the web.

VBS.tv - VBS is an online broadcast network with Academy Award-nominated director Spike Jonze (Adaptation, Being John Malkovich) as their creative director. Check out Illegal LA , a docu on illegal immigration with colorful viewpoints from all sides of the story, including an original member of the Crypts, the CEO of American Apparel, and undocumented kids on the streets of LA.

Hulu – Goes without saying, the best and most comprehensive source of traditional TV content on the web is Hulu. From subtle advertising that actually turns the volume down a notch, to embracing embedding and web-wide distribution from the get go, they’ve done a lot of things right. And the UX leaves little to complain about. Who would have thought that Fox/NBC would get this right?

What’s missing

Discovery is still stuck partying like it’s 1999. Recommendations, more often than not, travel via email or IM. Where is the powerful, cross platform, facebook-beacon-like tool that helps me both bookmark videos for later personal consumption and discover from the wisdom of my peers. I’ve heard that the teams at ffwd and Redux may have something up their sleeves.

What happens next?

What is the future of TV? Lots of money rides on the cable companies pulling their heads out of their proverbial asses and fixing the experience through their boxes. At the same time, there are competing box-top solutions in the form of the AppleTV, Vudu player, and Netflix’s offering. But none of these, lacking web browsers, provide access to the Hulu’s and VBS.tv’s of the webtv world. This is not a complete solution.

Will more people follow suit and start plugging in low-cost computers to their tvs, that, coupled with wireless keyboard and mouse, really deliver the web in a meaningful way? Is there room for a rogue 3rd party to develop a simple Mac Mini style box that’s reduced down to web browser, large harddrive, and get Miro (Itunes for bonus points)? Am I a total outlier – or will you plug a computer into your TV too?

I ran into this talk today via a post at crowdsourcing.com and was reminded of how powerful Clay’s thoughts were the first time I saw them during the Web 2.0 Expo.

According to Clay, the equivalent man power of 2,000 wikipedias a year is spent watching TV. This ‘cognitive surplus’ – an extension of human boredom – is transitioning into increased engagement via the web and related technologies.

I’m also super interested in his project Spot.us – crowdfunded citizen journalism – more on that later as I’ve been thinking about it all afternoon since the seredipity of the web brought it to my attention.

Like David, I’ve seen the change away from passive consumption of entertainment first hand in my own father’s post-work routine; where he used to come home and camp in front of the TV to unwind, much of that time is now spent behind the computer and, even if it’s now spent watching YouTube, is unquestionably more engaged. I’ve even gotten rid of my cable box and connected a computer to the TV.
